The Amour Tony nominee celebrated the work of Michel Legrand at the famed jazz club.
Melissa Errico, the Tony-nominated Broadway actor who has become an in-demand cabaret and concert artist celebrating all aspects of the American songbook and more, recently made her long-awaited debut at the famed London jazz club, Ronnie Scott’s. The July 12 concert let Errico explore the work of late Amour composer Michel Legrand, and she was joined by Tedd Firth on piano, Tim Rose on guitar, Oli Hayhurst on bass, and Sebastiaan de Krom on drums. The two-act set included such tunes as “I Was Born in Love With You,” “Other People’s Stories,” “The Way He Makes Me Feel,” “How Do You Keep the Music Playing?,” “Watch What Happens,” “Little Boy Lost,” “The Summer Knows,” “Martina,” “The Windmills of Your Mind,” and more.
Errico, who received an enthusiastic standing ovation following her performance, tells Playbill, “Ronnie Scott’s has lived in my imagination for years. Walking onto that stage, I felt the history of everyone who had made music there before me—but I also felt completely at home. The red lamps, the architecture hugging that crammed audience all around the quartet and me. It was so beautiful. Sharing Michel Legrand’s music in that legendary room, and receiving such an extraordinary welcome, was one of the happiest and most fulfilling moments of my career. I am still floating. We reached for the stars, and I got to dangle my feet off a crescent moon.”
The evening also featured lighting design by Rocky Noel and sound design by Nick Capuano and Ronnie Scott’s.
Errico has several upcoming concerts planned as well. Next month, she will continue her celebration of The Streisand Effect: Back to Barbra (With Billy), featuring the Billy Stritch Quartet, at the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, New York, August 17 and at the Provincetown Town Hall in Provincetown, Massachusetts, August 23. October 9 will find Errico, joined by the Tedd Firth Trio, at the Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington, New York, spotlighting the vinyl release of her new album in an evening titled I Can Dream, Can’t I?: Conversations and Illusions from The Great American Songbook.
A Tony nominee for her performance in Amour, Errico has also been seen on Broadway in Anna Karenina; My Fair Lady; High Society; Dracula, the Musical; and Irving Berlin’s White Christmas.
