“That concert was so damn fine.

“An afternoon of sheer ecstasy, connection and exquisite musicianship. With a stunning quartet led by Tedd Firth, she held the full house in total awe and rapture with her sublime musicality and radiant warmth.” — Mark Shenton

Tony Award–nominated vocalist Melissa Errico makes her Ronnie Scott’s debut with The Summer Knows, a stirring tribute to the music of Michel Legrand. A leading interpreter of the legendary composer’s work, Errico brings rare authority and intimacy to this repertoire, having starred in Legrand’s only Broadway musical Amour and performed at his sold-out memorials in Paris and London. Following her sold-out appearance at Cadogan Hall and her debut at the Montreal Jazz Festival, where she opened for George Benson, Errico brings this deeply personal repertoire back to London.

Joined by first-call US pianist Tedd Firth and his hand-picked group, Errico infuses Legrand’s most beloved songs, “The Windmills of Your Mind”, “Watch What Happens”, and more with the improvisational spirit and emotional depth that made her the beloved favourite of the great French composer. Moving fluently between French chanson and the American Songbook, the programmme will also include songs by Charles Trenet and Cole Porter, tracing a musical dialogue between Paris and Broadway.

Errico’s connection to Legrand is both artistic and personal. She recorded with him conducting the Brussels Philharmonic. Legrand and lyricists Alan and Marilyn Bergman entrusted Melissa with debuting their final collaboration, and The New York Times invited her to write Legrand’s eulogy.

A summer afternoon of swing, sensuality, and classic repertoire bringing to life the eternal allure of Paris.

Band: Tedd Firth (piano), Tim Rose (guitar), Oli Hayhurst (bass), Sebastiaan de Krom (drums)

All music by Michel Legrand.

“Errico’s sheer vocal power can ignite a room— but her singing is paradoxically most thrilling in the lowest part of her wide range. With tender attention to the lyric, her subtle expressive powers singing Michel Legrand’s songs held the audience rapt.” — David Benedict

Michel Legrand (1932–2019) was one of the most poignantly infectious popular composers of the twentieth century. From his groundbreaking introduction to American audiences in Jacques Demy’s all-singing The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, which helped renew the movie musical, to his many scores for film and theater—and even his work as a jazz pianist—he moved effortlessly between genres to create an emotional world and lyrical beauty all his own.Collaborating with writers in both French and English, including Alan & Marilyn Bergman, Jacques Demy, Norman Gimbel, Johnny Mercer, and Françoise Sagan, his songs received 13 Academy Award nominations and won three Oscars:

  • Best Original Song for “The Windmills of Your Mind” from The Thomas Crown Affair (1969)
  • Best Original Dramatic Score for Summer of ’42 (1972)
  • Best Original Song Score for Yentl (1984)
