Beloved musical returned to the Irish Rep stage in 2016, twelve years after it was first revived to great acclaim. Tony-nominee Melissa Errico reprised her celebrated performance as “Sharon.”
The groundbreaking 1947 musical follows an Irishman who steals a feisty leprechaun’s pot of gold and escapes with his daughter, Sharon, to Missitucky, a mythical region, part of the Jim Crow South. The daughter and the sprite each find romance with others, but also encounter bigotry, economic disparity, and cultural injustice.
“Ms. Errico is even more persuasive as Sharon than when I saw her in the role a dozen years ago. The character has a new, welcome earthiness that summons Sharon’s proud connections to the land, and Ms. Errico throughout emanates an easy, robust glow of pleasure that illuminates the stage. It goes without saying that she sings divinely.”
— Ben Brantley, The New York Times
“Her performance as Sharon is the stuff dreams are made of.”
— Terry Teachout, The Wall Street Journal
“Errico is divine in the role…she is so charming, so earthy, so full of life…it’s a role that is tailor-made for her.”
