Amour & After

“Melissa Errico is, and will continue to be, the premier interpreter of the musical legacy of Michel Legrand,” a dazzled critic wrote not long ago.

The only American artist invited to perform at Legrand’s great memorial in Paris in 2019–and The New York Times’ choice to write his eulogy—now, with Amour & After, Melissa offers a full-length concert devoted to the composer with whom she had a uniquely intimate relationship, a concert that also traces and celebrates France and French song in all its many moods and faces.

In it, she sings all the classic Legrand—from “Watch What Happens” to “Windmills of Your Mind”—but she also sings the music of Charles Trenet, Cole Porter in Paris, and Sondheim painting in Seurat’s Sunday park. Her subject in this show is the larger loving musical relation between France and America.

“That’s what I’m going to sing and talk about in these concerts–the beautiful entangled romantic adventure of America and France,” she says. “I decided to call this show Amour & After for two reasons. First, because that was the title of the show of Michel’s that I starred in and got a Tony nomination for—Amour, the only Broadway musical he ever wrote. (It wasn’t the original title, but the producers changed it because they said that Americans only know three French words: ‘amour’ ‘croissant’ and ‘bonjour.’) So, I’ll sing Michel’s music from Amour and everything that came after–all of our subsequent songs and recordings and collaborations.

“But I also call it Amour & After because that’s the great subject of French songs: amour—love—and everything that comes after, pain and bitterness and heartbreak and longing. And why all that pain always makes us only…wish for more amour.”

The concert also announced the release of an unexpected new musical treasure. Searching through her Legrand memorabilia, she discovered a lost vault of beautifully recorded home tapes she had made of Legrand songs, with Legrand himself on the piano—exquisite vocal sketches for the album that became the canonic Legrand Affair album.

She was also offered the words and music of the very last song that Legrand ever composed with his favorite lyric-writing team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

Inspired by both the April Legrand memorials and by, the new, and newly discovered material, Melissa, in tandem with the Ghostlight/Warner Music, released, in the autumn of 2019, a new deluxe extended version of Legrand Affair—An Even Grander Affair, incorporating eleven new numbers, including the best unheard studio sketches and the newly recorded final song, as well as some other surprises.

Melissa showed another aspect of her admiration by intelligently curating a film festival in New York in July 2019 with French Institute Alliance Française called, Summer of Michel Legrand.

Amour & After celebrates that recording–and is a show that can be imagined both with a large orchestra (with Legrand’s own arrangements, specially designed for Errico) or with smaller jazz trio forces.

“One of the most moving and even thrilling cabaret shows I’ve ever seen. When Miss Errico sings the work of the late and much-missed Michel Legrand, you just want to climb up inside one of her songs and stay there for the rest of your life.”

“A spectacularly beautiful album…a noteworthy addition to the short list of first-class American stylists (including Sarah Vaughan & Jack Jones), who have collaborated with Mr. Legrand over the years.”

“Nobody is like Melissa Errico…she interprets Michel Legrand’s work in ways no other artist ever has. Melissa Errico is a walking work of art, simply born to be a masterpiece, the value of which appreciates with each passing year. The overabundance of talent and beauty can be heard on her CDs and seen in her film and TV performances, but any person unlucky enough to have never seen her perform live doesn’t know what they are missing…Ms. Errico is, clearly, a Francophile and her understanding of Monsieur Legrand and the way his nationality informed his artistry is most definitely reflected in both her perception and performance of his music…for the entirety of her show, Errico was like a glass of Veuve Clicquot, effervescent and intoxicating, always beautiful.”

“Backed by a brilliant band led by the greatest living non-classical accompanist today, Tedd Firth, who was simply on fire, Errico, bursting with passion for her mentor, delivered a rich feast of reminiscences and anecdotes in her distinct “talking cabaret” style, as well as sumptuous song, in which she totally lost herself, sometimes literally becoming the music. Her voice is crystalline and clarion, as silvery and refreshing as a mountain stream, and she did a segue from “His Eyes, Her Eyes” to the lulling, sensual “The Summer Knows” that took my breath away.”

—David Noh/Gay City News

“A gob-smacking stunner! The actress-singer is absolutely on fire, in superb voice and utterly at the top of her game. As a total performer, she’s mesmerizing, vibrant, engaging…but more than that, she has the uncanny ability to actually inhabit a song. She feels the music down to her roots and when she sings, such as “What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life” or “You Must Believe In Spring” you clearly know she’s singing it just for you…the glorious voice, the charm, wit, and complete authenticity is the enchanting package that is Melissa Errico. To be bathed in all of this, plus her deep love for Michel Legrand is not only to be supremely entertained but to have shared in a truly special experience of stellar proportions.”
